Preserve the amount’s source

Record the tax period and date of the notice or account information supplying the balance. Put an unexplained payment reference or disputed figure in its own question note with the relevant evidence. Do not silently change a working total and treat the adjustment as an account finding. A payment discussion can address affordability while an accuracy question remains open. Keeping the sources distinct helps another reader understand which part of the concern depends on transaction history and which depends on household financial circumstances.

Understand what a proposed arrangement requires

Consult current IRS payment-agreement guidance about conditions, fees, and account considerations. Ask which periods the discussion includes and what obligations continue. Use financial records whose dates and calculations you can explain, identifying estimates and changes where they matter. If help is proposed, clarify its scope and cost before deciding. A margin note beside a draft schedule can explain the question you want reviewed, but it cannot establish that the suggested payment amount is available or that an arrangement has been accepted.
